" be prepared to move camp if your first spot doesn't pan out" JimP

I think another key thats overlooked a lot. We tend to invest so much time and effort into a spot......we don't wanna leave it and almost develop a "they will come mentality". Main reason I always try and have a plan A-D at the minimum. At least I have four plans to deviate from.

If there isn't sign then don't waste the time

Thanks for all the comments guys! Most of what I have read says you have to get away from the crowd for the best chance of success but what I glean from all of your comments is that you don't necessarily need. You have to be very intentional about where you are going (which may be deep or may not) and why, scout as much as you can, and have several back up plans.

One of my favorite parts about hunting is the adventure so I lean towards getting off the beaten path and camping in the wilderness. Good luck to all!

I am wondering everyone's thoughts on how deep you need to go in a heavily hunted area to get far enough away from the crowds for a successful elk hunt. Obviously, you could luck out right off the road but at what point do your odds go up dramatically? I am hunting in Wyoming this fall and as a non-resident it looks like most the non-wilderness areas are hit pretty hard. In steep terain is it 1 mile, 2, ..4?
How far is The Old Log Inn?

truth is really depends on the unit and terrain.

there are places you might go miles . others that are within (sometimes not always) a few hundred yards of roads.

around here in the later seasons you often (not always) see them from the truck.

I would say the ones I have had to work for the hardest are the ones I remember the most . so just get out there and git-r-dun!

We call em overlooked spots back east. Go where folks don't.
I say this with aspirations of finding one of my own some day.

One thing I want to emphasize on this thread. The dudes here are killers, I have looked at a lot of forums over the years and the guys here flat get it done on big animals! There are a few others that have a few guys, but my unscientific approach says that the regulars here are some of the most successful I have ever interacted with.

Threads like this are why, the advice is solid and well thought out!
