Well I've got about 50 of em living a couple hundred yards from my back fence. If they ever open a season (I know they never will) I will have the party and we can shoot em off my back porch. Right now I'd much rather shoot some paintballs at all the granola eaters in their subarus out there that feed them every day!
I want that invite! I say the forum BBQ will be at this time. Horse hunting and pig grillin sounds epic to me!

Funny story that happened tonight. Came home from looking at Christmas lights with the family, pulled in to the driveway to 4 feral horses in my neighbor and my front yards munchin away on the lawn. This is pretty normal so I park in the garage and walk out, give a whistle and a "Get, Get!", the horses freak out and run down the street (they are used to people feeding them, not shooing them). Once that happened I look over and my neighbors were having a Christmas party and about 10 people, kids included, were out front admiring the horses, I guess I ruined their night. I walked back in my garage chuckling to myself. Next time they are in the neighborhood I will let them trample their yard since apparently they didn't care about what they were doing to mine!

They are grazers just like elk so you might have something there.
I have had horses and I do love them, but they have their uses and places. Wild horses should be called "feral horses" because they are not native. Many states ae trying to control feral pigs so why not feral horses.
I've read that the feral horses are decendants of horses turned loose by farmers/ranchers during the depression/dust bowl of the 30's. Not from the Spanish. The same with the "wild burros" as they too are invasive critters turned loose to fend for themselves by the miners. The Horses don't belong here, and compete with native big game species for food and water. They should be treated like any non-game invasive species, shot on sight. I also think most affected Ranchers would agree, as they also compete with cattle. JMO

Maybe instead of food stamps and welfare we should offer up wild horse and burro meat, I'd be willing to bet that we'd figure out in a quick hurry how many of those people are really capable of find a job and supporting themselves.

http://www.pryormustangs.org/about_horses.shtml I guess the Pryor Mountain ones that I am most familiar with are a rare breed.

I think some of them were turned loose and interbred during the dust bowl, but the Spanish ones weren't all wiped out I don't think. They are all mixed up by now I think. I am pretty sure there were a few turned loose just in the last couple years when hay prices were so high. Hard to argue that about them being invasive species and the need to manage then. Wild dogs, wild pigs, wild burros, wild horses, we could have quite the smorgasbord.

Shoot them all. We eliminate every feral animal except for horses. Would you call a pack of feral domestic dogs majestic? No. I don't know how it happened but we need to stop making owners of "sanctuaries" millionaires.

2011 Trip 132.jpg This bunch of nice looking ones were just a few of a large number we saw during two hunting trips in 2b in NM that borders the Jicarilla Reservation. The kid that was helping us works for the USFS in the Carson NF there and he said they'd like to get rid of all of them because of the environmental damage they do, but their hands are tied. I think I saw about half as many horses as I did deer during those two hunts and these in the picture let us walk right up to them, so it wouldn't have been much of a hunt if they issued tags for them!

Heck guys pay big money to shoot drugged penned deer I'm sure they'd sell out of tags.

A bit off topic but MM what are those dogs in the pic? They look like pit bulls but maybe bull terrier.
They are border collie/heeler/aussie/mcnab/IDK what else mutts! That pic is from quite a while back in CA. Only have 1 of them left now and she is getting old. Time to start looking for a pup!

Can't wait to hunt Zebra, but a feral horse? no thanks.

Can't they just round up the females and sell them off?

The pro "wild horse" people are too strong. They will bankrupt the horse program and our range will be overrun. Even the checkerboard lawsuit will only remove the horses to holding facilities where they will eat up our tax dollars

Cant sell them or sell enough of them anyways because of the horse huggers. Kinda like the wolf huggers. Maybe the excess horses could be relocated to areas with alot of wolves to take the pressure off the elk.
