I made the long road trip to AZ for the second time in a few months. I was fortunate enough to be successful on another first for me. This time it was Javelina. I went to AZ expecting another solo experience, but between the guys that shared knowledge of the area over the phone/web and the great people I met in the field, this hunt was a whole different experience. I ended up hardly touching my own supplies and had people checking in on my progress and well being every day. I also ate some of the best food I've had on a hunt, thanks to invites to dinner every night. Thanks to everyone that shared knowledge and for all the hospitality; I can't thank you enough; I had a blast and can't wait to get back. I have to admit, I think I'm hooked. It was a blast!

Congrats.

Yes, hunting them is very addictive. I first went after them in 1994 and it turned into a yearly event ever since. Just love chasing those little gray ghost.

Nice Javelina! Looks awfully green there. I might be making that trip this year, pending the result of other draws.

Man, they are seriously ugly! How do they taste?
They have a taste all their own some like it and others don't.

As for cooking them some put them into a chili that has enough spices to kill any flavor other than the spices. I like to smoke the meat over a low heat and mesquite wood. Everyone that I have shared it with loves it. I have also made jerky out of it, but there is so little meat jerky is almost a waist of time.

Actually fried up the back strap with flour, salt and pepper just the other night. It was really good! The rest I planned on making breakfast sausage out of, as soon as I get a chance. I think it's gonna be great. I was very careful to keep it away from the scent gland on the back; other than that I cut it like everything else, just keep it nice and clean, separate all muscle groups and remove fat and connecting tissue. Looks, smells and tastes good:)

I've only been the one time and can definitely see how it could become an annual hunt!
