The snow is finally melting fast in the high country. It is time to start backpacking and scouting for deer season. I am starting to think about hunting season nonstop.

Its almost all gone in the La Platas and last weekend I went over Lizard Head Pass on my way to Grand Junction. The north facing slopes still have quite a bit looking south from Ridgeway. It's really a hit and miss proposition. Some of the Mts here in the SW part of Co have had a good year, some did not. Trout Lake (right at Lizard Head is really low, Ridgeway SP reservior looks almost full!

Brings back hunting memories CC. The Lizard head, Dolores Peak, Priest Gulch are where I use to hunt. Took a bath (short) in Cold Creek down by Dunton. I was in the mountians the year of big storm, snow and trees falling all around me, still had a good hunt.

Hope we get another winter like that this year..........we need it. You wouldn't belive McFee, you can't see the lake from the 145 bridge where it crosses the Dolores River. It still a mile or more away!

Scouting last week near Osier, a snow bank almost blocked the trail, I managed to get above it and drive the jeep down through the shallow part. We saw lots of elk and a new born calf with coyotes nearby. Elk were not gathered in herds yet. One trail was blocked and the amount of snow will take another month to melt. The country is extremely dry, Platoro reservoir is the lowest I have ever seen. I did see more deer than usual and plenty of elk but I didn't see much food for them to eat.
June should bring some rain

How's the North end of Blue Mesa looking if you've been over that way?

Yes They were, I watched from the mountain all morning. They really did some work and a ranger came, he tried to help them. Later a tow truck came, the girl was with the tow truck. They hooked in a series to get out. The ranger came over to ask me my part, I ttold him I was there to make pictures. Ranger was nice and had a sense of humor. Stuck guy was eyeing the girl and she was looking at him while keeping her distance, I thought it was funny and got the picture to prove it.

Joyce and German Brown Trout June 25, 2013 (2).jpgTrout from Trujillo Meadows (2).jpgJoyce and same trout June 25 (2).jpgTrujillo Meadows Reservoir, Conejo County CO (2).jpgJust got back from a week in Chama, NM and did a little fishing and exploring in the Colorado high country just north of the NM state line. Snow almost all gone. Quakies are almost all infested with tent catapillers and lots old beetle kill. Everything else is really green and lush. Caught some nice trout...1 Brown, a couple of Cutbows and the rest Rainbows. My wife caught the Brown, about 17" and one of my Cutbows probably would go #3. Nice fish!

We also rode the narrow guage steam train from Chama to Antonito. Fun, saw lots of deer and elk.

That is my playground CC. I am in walking distance from the restaurant at Osier, and the La Manga meadows above Apache Canyon is where I unload the snowmobiles. I was about 1milw above Osier last month when the Remington 700 went off on its own.
You and your wife sure caught some nice fish. We plan to be back in late july to august

I am seriously considering a elk/deer wilderness packin hunt in 80/81 with Fishtail Outfitters into this area during muzzleloading season for 2014. Really nice country and pretty close to my home place. We accidently stumbled onto this small lake and the fishing was just great. We caught 6 fish in about 2 hours from shore. There is a small launch ramp and next year we plan on going back and taking out canoe.
