Our local shooting club belongs to SCI because they give us range improvement grants almost every year. I was thumbing thru SCI's latest magazine "Safari" and saw this ad for Whitetail hunting. It is obviously a breeding farm that sells it's animals for people to shoot. Notice I avoided any reference to hunting, because this is not hunting. The antlers on the deer are actually disgusting, at least in my view. There are a lot of ads for deer & elk like this....farmed & fenced.

Now you know why I don't like SCI as they allow these animals to be scored (their scoring system) and entered in their record book! What a joke!

Rant over...................

C.C., ya know my friend, I agree with all that you said. But it's hard to overlook some of the really good things that SCI does for the hunting community, like grants to your range. I'm a SCI member because I wanted to go to their big shindig in Reno,( but won't be able to make it.)
I admit though, I personally wish that there never was a "scoring system" for wildlife. Hunters should just be happy with taking a nice animal and not worry what the numbers are.

On the canned hunts, that has been going on for some time now. You pay by the inch so to speak on what size buck you want to shoot. Naturally all these hunts are on high fence farms where they add the supplements and only breed with the best genes to get those type of antlers. You can get cheaper hunts by shooting their culls if that is the type of hunt that you want.

As for SCI, I belong to a African hunting forum and you ought to hear them about SCI. About the only thing that most of them like about SCI is the conventions that they put on. Also lately if you go to one and put in for a draw on a African hunt you really need to research it, there have been a lot of complaints filed with the main office of SCI for what their chapters have been offering in the drawings. It has come to a buyer be ware type of thing.

Agreed. Hunting has become so "commercialized" IMO and a lot of these hunting shows on TV don't help the cause. That's why i like the Eastman's videos and magazines. Id much prefer to shoot a 120" free range buck on my own then shoot a 160" high fence that eats at the same protein feeder every day.

Not sure of the cost. I've only been once and it's quite the experience. If there is anything that walks or crawls on the earth, there will be someone there that will sell you a hunt for it!

I wish the high fence places didn't exist. However, they do, and generally it is a legal past time to go shoot farm raised animals at these facilities, so I don't necessarily begrudge an individual for going and doing it. It does really stick in my craw though when guys pretend that it's legit and try to hide the fact that it was in a pen.
