Hello all,

First off, we are more than willing to help anybody with Colorado elk tags/GMU info when the leftovers come out or any other info I can help with down here. My son and I have zero points this year for WY antelope and were considering this game plan.

1st choice - Hunt areas 11/103/34
2nd choice - Hunt areas 17/22/2/26

If that falls through we pick up leftovers. Any help is greatly appreciated. We make the best elk jerky on the planet!

Thanks in advance.

Sorry. Can't help you with any of these units. But have you signed up for the Eastmans digital issues? The digital issues will give you more info in the MRS section than the magazine will and in the Wyoming antelope issue there is some good info about these "yellow" units aka the units you can draw with 0 pts.

I just have general stuff, but in 2 most of the public is on Black Hills NF, so not traditional antelope country, but occasionally you catch them around there. 17 I thought was tougher access than areas south of Gillette like 23, 24, 27 but lots of antelope. 11 and 34 have some walk-in areas, but access is also pretty tough there from what I know. The MRS had this info., So that would also be where I suggest looking first. Its pretty darn useful. I would rate your second choice ones 22, 26, 17, then 2. I think there are some big parcels that can be accessed in 22 and some friendly ranchers if you go that route.

Work2hunt,
Thanks sir, son ad I just had that discussion last night. As you said lots of good info out there on the yellow units. We have hunted 38 the past years without points but our farmer sold his place.

Againstthewind,

Yes sir. We started the homework there and honestly didn't know there was any "green" spots we could draw with zero points. Gonna look at 22 closer. Thanks again.

If you can manage to draw a tag for 11 or 34 you have lot of walk in areas to hunt although they are usually better after the 1st week of the season. You should draw any of your second choices, 22, 17, 2 & 26 but you will need to pay trespass fee mostly likely to hunt any of these. The G&F will send you a land owner list if contact them. I hunt a lot of second choices areas but pay a trespass fee and most every time it has turned out to be good hunt. Good Luck !

CrossCreeks,
Thanks sir. Good to hear. In previous years we hunted the last week to 10 days due to chasing elk in Colorado. Glad to hear that. Thanks again.

Just a quick FYI: the WGFD is no longer distributing a landowner list for the Sheridan region. They did last year, because I got the list, but I contacted the Sheridan office recently and was told that they no longer have a list. Just something to be aware of if you do end up with tags in any of those units.

I hunted 16 last year, and talking to other hunters, I had heard that those on the landowner lists filled their desired quotas pretty early and were getting irritated by people continuing to call into the fall. Not sure if that had anything to do with the change.

Thanks Murdy, sounds like your going down the right path. Probably has something to do with it. Thanks for the heads up.

Hell, my son made some calls to some Sheridan ranchers in December 2014 for the 2015 season and got chewed out for calling too early..........go figure.
I talked to the warden for the Sheridan area last December. He told me I would be better off to head South to unit 23. He said the Sheridan area ranchers have all the hunters they want and a standing list of hunters waiting. That is right from the warden's mouth.

Can you draw those green ones with zero points? I never really pay attention to that. If you can I might be able to talk some family into trying also. They are back east, like east side of the Appalachians east, but maybe.

According to Eastmans Magazine issue 147 units 17,22,23 and 26 are all 'green chip' units that need zero points to draw. Might want to bounce that off the WYFG website for verification.

Depends on the year, but for the most part yes. Remember also the numbers in Eastmans are usually tied to 100% draw success. We have had good to very good success applying for areas that required 1 or 2 with zero points.

We hunted 38 last year too. We saw a fair number of animals across the highway in 34, don't know about public vs. private though.

I live in unit 34 and the access is limited. a descent among of public, but all small pieces so you have to be very careful. Good map and a chip is a must. Frustrating at times because they'll be standing feet away from public, but never cross onto it.
