Help, starting from ground zero.

Hello and good morning. I was able to secure a deer combo license this year. First time with a Montana tag. Lived in Wyo. for 25 years before relocating back to my native Upper Penninsula of Michigan. Now, like so many, I'm in the draw programs for non residents before I can get back to Wyoming for a hunt in familiar ground. In the meantime I'm taking advantage of other opportunities to get back to the wide open spaces of the west. Hence, the Mt. deer combo tag. If anybody could give me any tips, recommendations of where to start it would be extremely helpful and appreciated. Since I'm traveling from Michigan I'd like to look into opportunities in the eastern portion of the state. My preference would be an area with good whitetail habitat as that would be my preference. However, a chance at a good mulie for the area hunted probably wouldn't get a pass. Reason for WT preference is I lived in far western Wyoming "Region G" so have a a lot of experience and knowledge with mule deer that I'd be more than willing to share with fellow forum members. As far as Mt., just looking for an enjoyable trip. Something to look forward to. I'd be a solo hunter on this trip as most of my hunts are. I probably would take my best buddy for company. He's my shadow. My 2 year old chocolate lab that would share my truck and camper. If I was in an area that offered some upland birds or small water duck hunting that would be a bonus. So, any info. on areas in eastern Mt. I could hone in on would jumpstart my research. Not looking for anyones honey hole. Mostly just a starting point from those with experience.I would prefer looking at the BMA's or private lands with trespass fees. Thanks in advance! Stevevan

Do you happen to have a copy of last years BMA booklet with the included maps? Many significant creek bottoms will hold WT in SE MT, not familiar with NE, but likely there too. Bird population was vg where I was SE the last couple years.

I'd look for the larger BMA's that limit hunter numbers. If you don't have the booklet, holler, I can PM you a few to consider. Last I checked a search for Montana BMA with the number, would bring up last years BMP map.

I hunted around Fort Peck lake before. Numbers are down in most of eastern MT but there is alot of public land and block management in that area!

Lots of options for whitetail in Eastern MT. Also seems to be a lot of Sharp tails and a decent number of pheasant. If you want to, PM me with specific questions.
