So Im just starting my research on light weight rifles. I really want to stay with a 7mm Rem Mag, which seems to be limiting my options.

Price range is $1,500 which throws out the Ti. Kimber seems nice but not the caliber I want.

Any recommendations? Im open for other calibers but this will be an all around gun, whitetail to elk.

I have a Winchester extreme weather ss 7mm , I really happy with it! I know you said light weight, but the lighter you go the more kick you'll probably have. I'm sure Tim & CC would agree. My son just put a deposit on a Proof Research 300 win mag carbon wrapped barrel. It's way out of that $ range. My thoughts! Good luck

Have you looked at the Tikka T3 lite? 6.4 lbs in 7mm Rem Mag. Depending on the scope you choose, you can be around 7.5lbs. and under budget ready to hunt.

Not sure how I missed that. I looked at them but didnt notice the 7mm. Thank you.

The cheaper I can get the rifle the more I can upgrade my optics.

You are welcome. They come with a 1" moa guarantee. Smooth bolt, good trigger, stock is nothing special, most upgrade the mounting system. Have two t3 lites in 270, both shoot great. I used the Tikka rings for about 10 years with no issues, but have since upgraded them. Basically a budget Sako in many respects.

I super pumped about the Tikka now, once again I simply overlooked the magnums. It will keep me under budget and allow for some upgrades.

Anyone ever get a custom muzzle brake installed on one? I used to shoot a BAR with the Boss, loved the recoil but hated the noise.

Tikka T3 is a great gun. I have it in 270 and 7 Rem Mag, love them. My gunsmith installed muzzle break on 7 mm, I don't know the brand but it works great.

Vais makes a real nice brake that is designed to reduce the recoil while raising the noise level to a minimum. They're still loud, just not as loud as others.

Thanks everyone! I found one online at Sportsman Warehouse, I am going to take a road trip.

So far all online reviews are great and if it "feels" good Im going to save some money. I actually sold my BAR for $800, which should cover the cost of the rifle.

1. Winchester model 70 Extreme Weather SS: 6lbs 12oz in both calibers, $1007 best price, Excellent reviews with excellent stock and average trigger.

2. Tikka T3 Lite Stainless: 6lb 3oz both calibers, $678 best price, Mostly good reviews with excellent accuracy and lots of plastic.

3. Savage Weather Warrior model 16 FCSS: 6lb 14oz both calibers, $654 best price, Good reviews with excellent accuracy but average stock.

4. Remington model 700 Mountain SS: 6lb 8oz both calibers, $903 best price, Good reviews with average stock and good trigger.

5. Ruger M77 Hawkeye All Weather: 7lb both calibers, $656 best price, Mixed reviews with complaints about the trigger.

6. Browning X-Bolt Stainless Stalker: 6lb 5oz in 7mm-08, 6lb 8oz in .308, $951 best price, Mixed reviews with complaints of poor trigger but great stock and safety.

7. Kimber 84m Montana: 5lb 2oz both calibers, $1138 best price, Very mixed reviews from great to awful. Accuracy issues with some.

That was a preliminary list I made a couple years ago to narrow down my choices for .308 and .270 WSM, I'm sure the .270 WSM weights will be very similar to the 7mm Rem Mag. Based on reading reviews I narrowed it down to the Winchester, Remington and Savage. I liked them all but the Winchester just felt the best to me. For the price you couldn't go wrong with the Savage. That company has come a long way in the last 10 years. Good Luck!

I have a tikka t3 absolutely no regrets with that gun. From wet high altitude in wyoming to the thick snowy woods of Minnesota it has never failed. It is always very smooth. I have had the gun close to ten years . I didn't always take the best of care of it when I was a kid either, and it's held up great. I have it in the 308 the kick isn't that bad for how light it is, but I added a recoil pad. My next gun will be a stainless tikka t3 in either 7mmremmag or 300winmag. This is a very accurate gun. Bullet holes touch at 100 yds with hornada ammo. You won't regret a tikka.

Thanks for sharing that list!

The plastic on the Tikka is my only concern but the weight, price and available caliber plus the good reviews are making it very appealing. Im headed to Sportsmans Warehouse next weekend to get the feel of it.

Oops, Those are actually the weights comparing 7mm-08 and .308. It still gives a general idea of the weights between brands.

Honestly they are all probably good rifles. It really comes down to personal preference. My friend has a Tikka in .270 WSM and it is a sweet gun with excellent accuracy. 3/4 moa with factory loads.

I've heard great things about Tikkas but have never owned one. One good thing about a Remington 700 is it is one of the most well known/proven bolt action platforms for accurizing and customizing at a later date.
