Don, I can't find that $25 code at Gander you mentioned. Do you know what it is?

(I was looking at the Spot, but you pretty much convinced me to go with the Delorme)

Murdy,

Coupon code is GMT5.

There is also a rebate of 50 dollars for it from GM. If you need that let me know and I can email it to you

Just my opinion here...If you're planning to hunt by yourself regularly, I would strongly recommend getting a personal locator beacon. They are built specifically as distress beacons with dedicated satellites and more power, the signal goes straight to the national rescue coordination center and when you register it, you can fill in all your medical info so the rescue teams know what to expect.
With the spot-type of devices, they have lower power and the signal goes to their ground station and then their people have to relay the message to rescue services.
The PLB I have doesn't require a subscription, but you can pay to be able send "I'm OK" messages, but it's only one-way.
If you want definitely want two-way communication, then a PLB won't work for you.

I may be out of line here, but if you can't keep your feet and hands warm when it's 74 degrees in your dwelling and you have problems wearing boots, how in the world do you think you can function to even stay alive out in the mountains on a hunt, especially on a DIY solo hunt? It's a whole new world for flatlanders at altitude out there even for people that are in good shape.

I cut and harvest trees for 12 hours a day from coast to coast and even over seas., I climb them. 90% of people that meet me dont realize that I have heart problem. My heart is not a real issue my cardiologist told me altitude wont harm me. My hands are blue and hurt 98% of the time but i still run a chainsaw since i was young they turn blue frost bite is the worst because it sets faster on me. I run everyday I bike every other day I out run and bike other men. I train draft horses to log. It don't scare me about my feet the electric boot warm foot pads i found the other day pretty much took that problem.

Wow, that is not the guy I pictured when you spoke about your feet and hands being blue even in the house. Go get a big one, but be extra careful knowing what you have to cope with and good luck to you!!!

switchbackkd I wish you luck my friend. I had a Hunting partner that had type 1 Diabetes since he was 11. We hunted for 20 years together and he would never let it stop him. Many of his so called friends would never hunt with him because they were afraid that something might happen to him. In the twenty years we hunted together he only had one marginal problem but I did what he instructed me to do and he was fine within a hour or so and we continued the hunt. He would never let it stop him. Good Luck!!
