If the bolt wont close on FL sized brass it sounds like a headspacing or case length issue and possibally your chamber is to tight in 1 of these areas. You could try shortening a case a bit and see if the bolt will close. If you color the neck and shoulder of a case with a black marker and then try to chamber it you will be able to see where it is tight by where it rubs the marker off of the case. Is this a new unfired rifle?

Smith said it has just a really small throat and the gouging of the brass is where the throat actually starts. I ordered a new custom made barrel for it and I should be good from there

That may cure the problem, but why pay for a new barrel when it's the manufacturer's fault for selling an inferior product that won't even shoot factory loads. What would a person do if they had bought that gun and didn't reload like you do? I would presume they would take it back and let Remington fix it at their cost and that's still what I'd be doing if you're having to replace the barrel.

That was a plan, but since I'm putting a suppressor on that gun, I might as well put a barrel on it.
