I was a little worried about kick with my 300wsm but it doesn't (to me) kick any harder then my 25-06. As for the holdover I know my hold overs at 400 and 500 yards. My scope goes from a thick post to a thin wire at the cross hairs. It works out that the point of where the thick to thin meeting is my 400 yard hold so I'm not guessing. Past 500 and a prone position I would pass the shot or do some more crawling and sneaking to get withen the 400 yard wheel house.
300yd zero with a standard duplex(leupold), crosshairs level with goats back should be 400, post level with back 500. Puts me in vitals with the majority of my magnum rifles.

Yep, that's one simple way for longer shots with a nonadjustable reticle like that IF a person actually checks their rifle at the various distances, rather than just reading how someone else is doing it. It eliminates spending a fortune on the adjustable turret scopes that are now the rage! Doing like you're saying is similar to the way you use the other scopes that are made with stadia below the main reticle that are accurate at known distances for a particular caliber and bullet.

My Leupolds (I have 5 VXIIIs on various rifles) all are over 10 years old and have the Leupold Ballistic Turrets on them. They each cost around 100.00 for the modification. Not all that expensive and they work!!!

I knew that option was available, but I had no idea it was that cheap to have one redone!
The only disadvantage is that they are setup for only one load and you have to stick with it. I picked the load that shot best and the one I would use exclusively in that particular rifle. For example in my 25-06 my Ruger M77 really shoots 117 gr bt Sierras great and I like this load for deer and antelope. In my .300 Wby the same for 180 gr Nosler partitions for elk. I suppose you could get different turrets for the same rifle/scope for different loads, you would just have to re-setup the scope for every change. Probably a pain in the rear!
