Depends on what you’re trying to achieve. Hard cases are good for pickup beds and flying. Soft cases are good for the backseat and helping keep guns from rubbing if you don’t want that. Sometimes it’s easier to get into a soft case depending on how your setup or what your doing. Also with a soft case, you don’t always have to zip completely to have easy access and still get protection.

I have both. 99% of the time a good padded soft case will fit the bill, even if the rifle has to ride in the back of the truck with other equipment and junk as long as it fits into it's spot nice and snug and the weather is good.

Hard cases are required for flights and are good to use when traveling when the soft case just won't do. Plus you can find good ones for fairly cheap if you don't want to go with the more expensive ones.

If you are looking for a hard case I would suggest that you look at the Harbor Freight Apache case. It is a clone of the Pelican case and is very sturdy. I used one on my last trip to Africa and it stood the test of the baggage monkeys and being dropped no less than 3 or 4 times. It has enough padding inside of it that your rifle will be held very secure. It has two molded in hasp to place padlocks into for locking along with wheels for dragging around.

I use both depending on how I am hunting. In my sxs I use a hard case. Colorado requires guns to be unloaded completely and enclosed in a case. I usually am driving so my gun is in a hard case. My passenger can use a soft zippered case because he can hold it to keep it from bouncing around.

I’ve flown a few times with mine and just made sure everything was secured tight inside with foam. TSA checked it, no issues. Lock it up and you're good to go.
