A couple things I firmly believe in:

1) No such thing as bad dogs, just bad owners
2) 50% of the dog is bloodline, other 50% is what you do with it

I just thought I'd share some information in case anyone is interested! I have a 4 yo GSP that I trained myself from day 1 at home through catching pigeons and so on - the whole works! I am very satisfied with how she performs not only hunting but with my two boys ages 3 and 1. Anyways, I followed a general timeline from the kennel I got her from of videos that demonstrate what to do at certain ages and so on. I felt I would share the link to their website and they also have a YouTube channel. I followed it pretty much to a T and I will do it over again when we get another in a year or two.

There's nothing like that bond between you and your hunting dog!

Thank you for posting! I'll definitely check it out. I've had two GSP's over the last 10-15 years. The female finally passed away at age 14 summer before last. My male is long in the tooth too. I've always loved the breed. Both dogs came to me from a rescue situation and neither were ever hunted. Something I've always been interested in but have never done. Living in the mountains and not knowing anyone who bird hunts or who has hunting dogs makes it tough. Like a lot of things I'll have to figure it out on my own... self taught.

We pick up our new female GSP next weekend! She will be 8 weeks old, and comes from a good hunting line. I'm going to give training her and hopefully hunting with her a whirl. I got a book that was recommended to me by the breeder called "Gun Dog" by Richard Wolters. The breeder offers some classes for training the dog to hunt and I've found another outfit closer to me that does too but it's expensive and not sure I can swing it?

Hopefully I can figure this stuff out and have a dog that will at least half way know what to do in the field. We'll both be learning together cuz I have no idea what I'm doing either! Lol!

Very cool! I never had a bird dog growing up and decided I wanted to give it a shot, very glad I did. Just stick with it, there will be frustrating times but the dog will have so much desire to figure out exactly what you want! The videos/timeline worked really well for me, hopefully you find some use out of them if you choose to follow it! Curious to see how things go, keep me updated over the next several months, good luck!
