I think this bust proves the old saying that you can't fix stupid, LOL!

Poacher to Pay $30,240 in Fines

11/3/2014

LARAMIE - A tip to the Wyoming Game and Fish Department’s Stop Poaching Hotline helped wildlife investigators apprehend a Chugwater man on multiple counts of taking big game animals without licenses.

Cheyenne Game Warden David Ellsworth said the tip lead investigators to a social media site where 47-year-old John Clark had posted photos of the animals he shot, including a photo of a buck antelope that he said was his “first antelope with a bow.”

Further investigation revealed Clark, who lived in Rock River at the time, never purchased a hunting license for at least six big game animals that he killed between 2010 and 2013. Investigators obtained a search warrant for Clark’s residence that lead to the discovery of antlers and horns from the poached animals. They also discovered a pelt from a swift fox and talons from great horned owls and golden eagles.

During the investigation, Clark admitted to shooting a mule deer buck each year from 2010 to 2013, all without a license. When presented with the social media photograph of his “first antelope with a bow,” he admitted that he had also shot that buck without a license in 2012. He then confessed to taking an additional buck antelope in 2010 and another in 2012.

Clark was charged with four counts of taking mule deer without a license; two counts of taking antelope without a license; illegal possession of elk meat; and two counts of illegal possession of mule deer meat. He was also issued warnings for illegal possession of raptor parts, and for theft/removal of a Game and Fish Department “road closed” sign. The Game and Fish Department did not take action on charges of trapping without a license, illegal take of a swift fox, or an over limit of trout that was also discovered during the investigation.

Albany Circuit Court Judge Honorable Robert A. Castor ordered Clark to pay $30,240 in fines and suspended his hunting, fishing and trapping privileges for 36 years. Four charges of illegal game possession were dismissed by the prosecution.

Ellsworth thanked the Wyoming Game and Fish Wildlife Forensics Laboratory for their help in identifying the species and gender of the game meat found in Clark’s possession during the investigation and the Albany County Attorney’s Office for their work on the case.

Ellsworth said this case demonstrates the importance of poaching reports from the public. “This whole investigation got started with a Stop Poaching tip. It stresses how important it is for members of the public to contact us if they have any information about possible poaching crimes,” he said.

Anyone with information on a wildlife crime can call the Stop Poaching Tip Line at 1-877-WGFD-TIP (1-877-943-3847). Tips may also be reported online at wgfd.wyo.gov, or by text at TIP411. Informants can choose to remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward for information leading to an arrest.

Nice job Wyoming Wardens!! I've been fortunate to have met a few of your wardens and found them to be very professional and dedicated! It's good to see the court system back them up with substantial penalties for those who steal our wildlife.

As a society we are lucky that most criminals are idiots and end up getting caught.

The wardens in WY were great. They seemed to really care and were super accommodating to us. I hope they catch the idiots that shot all of the antelope up 33 mile road last month.

Good job Wyoming Wardens indeed, But the Judge that handed down that sentence is to be commended as well. He hit the poacher in the wallet. That will hurt. The poacher has already proven that he hunts without a license, so the 36 year revocation will mean little or nothing to a creep like him. We need more Judges like this, to put some teeth in wildlife violations. Not just a slap on the wrist.
TopGun, the antelope poaching was a "Kill Drive" with an AK-47 rifle fired from inside a Nissan SUV....from what I've heard there were scores shot from Casper heading towards Buffalo. Should be something on the G&F website.

I received and email from the WYFG right before we left about a group of guy in a red Xterra driving up 33 mile road shooting antelope with assult rifles. If I can find the email I will send it to you or post the contents here. They found several dead antelope and a mule deer scattered about 33 mile road. Said the license plate was white with red letters. I spoke to a rancher while I was in the area and they were pissed to beat all Heck about it. Apprently they were one of the witnesses and called it in.

WGFD Still Seeking Information in 33-Mile Road Poaching Case

*

CASPER - The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is still seeking information on the Sept. 26 poaching along 33-Mile Road west of Casper.

*

Game Warden Daniel Beach says, “We have located four pronghorn antelope and one mule deer shot and left in this wanton destruction case.” Wanton destruction is shooting an animal and leaving it to waste.

*

The vast size of this crime scene and the current tall grass habitat conditions has made identifying all the poached animals difficult.

*

“We followed blood trails and even had a concerned landowner volunteer to fly this large crime scene to help identify carcasses. We think there may be a few more animals involved that we were unable to locate. It is common in this style poaching to not locate all the poached animals because they are often wounded and then travel long distances,” Beach states.

*

“The public has been great in providing information, but so far, no tips have led us to the suspects involved,” says Beach.

*

Eyewitnesses described the vehicle as a dark red or maroon, newer model Nissan SUV, possibly an Xterra. The front license plate was white with red letters or numbers. Four males were believed to be in the vehicle at the time of the shooting.

What a shame that there are jerks like that in our society and especially with guns! I hope they catch them and throw the book at them! I thought you were talking up on Hazelton Road, as I believe some also refer to it as 33 Mile Rd.

I agree. Its very sad there are people in this world with such a disregard for wildlife. And no....33 mile does "end" and turn into Hazelton, and I have heard of HZ referred to as 33 mile. But this was south of there by a good bit. Hope they catch them, but I doubt they will at this point.

If there is more than two people, they will eventually talk about it
Or they'll post it on facebook or other social web sites. Dumb people do dumb things. Like the guy driving an oil field company truck through a herd of antelope, killed a bunch. Then dragged them in front of the truck to take his picture so he could post it on facebook....leaving the license plate exposed! Or the guy who shot the big bull elk, posted his picture, along with a prominent and easily identifiable Yellowstone Park landmark in the background. Somebody will talk in that group off 33 mile road, and the big cash reward will not hurt either.
