All, I am new to Wyoming (and out West hunting) and was wondering what type/brand of handheld GPS you suggest for hunting WY? I've heard there are some out there that show BLM/state land/private boundaries, any pointers here would be great. Do you have to purchase an SD card to get these features? Look to hit the fields/timber this Fall. THanks

The time to get a GPS is right now with all kinds of sales going on and the Garmin brand is the one to buy IMHO. They run from a little over $100 to over $500 depending on whether you want one with all the bells and whistles or just one that will get you around and tell you the landownership status. Most now have the capability to take a micro SD card with all of that on them or you can also buy a download right on the net and install it by plugging your GPS into your computer with a USB cable that should come with the GPS. The chips and downloads aren't cheap, but everyone will tell you to not leave home without it!!!

Garmin with the HuntMaps all the way. I picked up a refurbished Garmin Dakota 20 on Cabelas website for $110 and a chip for another $100 and was set. Then I used Garmin's Birdseye to download satellite imagery of where I was hunting and it was the cat's ass. You could see what meadows were coming up ahead, where the FS trails went, etc. I won't go back into the mountains without that setup in hand.

I have a Garmin 62 and it works great. I've used it for the last 3 seasons in Wyoming and Montana. Like the others have said- you can download the information on to your computer from OnX Maps to your computer then transfer to your handheld GPS. You can look at all the ownership on your computer when planning your hunt. I can't imagine hunting Wyoming or Montana without mine.

I have the 62SC and I don't use the camera so I really didn't need the SC. They had them on sale a few years back so I bought one. I'm not really sure which one would be best - I just bought it because it was on sale. Sorry I'm not much help

One thing to consider with some of the Garmin touch screens is they don't work with gloves on. A buddy of mine has one and his fingers got pretty cold on this year's elk hunt. I used OnXmaps for the first time this past season and they are pretty remarkable. The thing about gps and any other electronics is they always seem to come up with great advances. The one thing I really don't like about many of the current gps models is the screen is so small it's somewhat of a pain in the rear zooming in and out. Obviously a larger screen means more bulk and weight but it sure would be nice having a larger screen. I've always used topo quads in the field in the past to write comments while scouting and hunting. I may be a little old fashion but even with a gps I use both maps plus topos. My quad maps have notes written all over them....but I also have a lot of way points on my gps.

My Oregon 450T works with gloves just fine. My iPhone on the other hand doesn't so I bought a pair of Burton snow boarding gloves that have the special finger tips to use my phone.

I have a Garmin Oregon and while the unit works well I would get one with a bigger screen. I highly recommend the OnX maps (Huntinggpsmaps.com) like the other guys on here have. They update every year and so far have not lead me astray. It also has a Google Maps plug in that is really valuable and will save you some driving and boot leather.

I have a garmin 60CSx and it works fine. I am sure there are better but what I have works for me.
I ended up getting a Garmin 60S, its smaller, but I think it will do the job. It was on sale for $200, will get OnX chip soon. Cant wait to try it out
