Good Reno Buffets

We're going to Reno for Hot August Nights, we'll be looking for some good buffets while we're there.

Or maybe I should phrase that as what are the nasty or not-worth-the-money buffets we should stay away from? (I know Terrible's is one, it lived up to it's name the one time I got talked into going there).

We're looking for $20ish dollars a head, plus or minus a bit, but I'll pay a bit more if the food is worth it.

Also, anybody ever been to Peg's Glorified Ham N Eggs? It's just down the street from where we'll be staying and the stuff on the menu looks pretty good.

Thanks

Is there a good buffet? I try and stay away from them myself. Pegs is really good from what I've heard haven't been there myself but they and a few restaurants in town. There is a few really good places to eat down town where all the HAN show is. For me I stick to the local places, they always seem to be the best imo. You should check out these

Archies, awesome Burgers
Little Waldorf Saloon, lots of beers on tap, awesome hot wings and great atmosphere
Silver Peak Brewery, local beer and lots of great food
Antonios Mexican grill, the best in town
Reef Sushi
Campo, spendy but good Italian, outdoor seating by the river. If there is any water in the river.
Reno Provisions, all farm to plate stuff, great fresh food kind of a foodie place but get a tour of the butcher shop and their production kitchen, pretty cool
Inside Whitney Peak Hotel they have a great rest there and you can climb the outside rock wall that goes up the front of the building! Scary!

Have fun

I would take that advice from Ikeepitcold. There really aren't any good buffets. We have eaten at Black bear Diner in Sparks a couple of times and the food was pretty good even though it is a franchise and not local.

That thought was going through my mind as I was writing that... However, the extended family loves buffets and the first thing they look at is price :( (That's how we ended up at Terribles)

So we're going to be eating primarily at buffets, but I figure I can at least avoid the really bad ones.

Thanks to you and Ikeepitcold for the info on the restaurants.

The Little Waldorf, Archies and Black Bear are on the top of the list, Reno Provisions and Silver Peak Brewery will be targets of opportunity, I want to at least stop by Reno Provisions to check the place out.

Louis Basque corner is top of my go to list same price as the better troughs (buffets) less people way more fun if you get the right table. Koney island has a big following.

Ikeepitcold where's the Mexican place at?

And for breakfast try big eds on forth st

Koney Island???? Like New York style Koney Island or other?

I ask because we have a (several) chains back home call Coney Island, they all owned by the same family, but they split off after feuds at some point.

Anyways, I love their chili dogs and they call them coney dgos...But, I went to a hot dog joint somewhere one time and asked for a coney dog and got something with pickles and lettuce and all kinds of other stuff...apparently there is a "Koney Island" style of dog from New York or Chicago or something.

Thanks again guys

Way, way back we used to go to huge buffets at the Lake Tahoe casinos like Harrah's and Harvey's. I assumed they did the same in Reno. Did they quit doing those?
They still have them but casino buffets are not what I would call "good" though some people equate cheap with good.

Just a quick update, thanks for all the suggestions. We managed to only go to one buffet (Yeah!!).

We went to Peg's twice...I highly recommend it. Eggs Benedict (one of my favorites) with crab cakes instead of ham (they have multiple varieties) was awesome...second time I had the country sausage, eggs and pancakes, great.

My wife got one of their Monterey skillets...she's was concerned about not getting enough food, until she saw it. Literally a 16 or 18 inch skillet with the main course (burrito, whatever), beans, fruit, toast, etc. My wife was happy.

Service is a little goofy, they're very busy, which contributes, but I had one of the servers come to our area and refill coffee at every table except ours several times before my wife finally stuck the cup in front of him as he was walking by. Other servers were more attentive, just busy.

Louis Basque Corner was cool. I had the lamb, I loved it (my wife doesn't like it, so we don't eat it at home). She had the steak, it was simple, so she wasn't thrilled with it, but the combination of things (beans, salad, bread, ambiance, etc.) made the overall experience good. Of, and if you order the Winnemucka (sp?) coffee, it isn't coffee. But, you'll probably like it :).

Silver Peak was pretty good, we ate there late one night, so I ate light (tune poke). The porter was good.

And mixed drinks at Rum Bullion's bar at Circus Circus are only $9...If you had a bad week, I highly recommend an AMF (or three)... it will definitely take the edge off. Just don't plan on driving anywhere.

For those of you that live outside of Reno, we stayed at a place called Legacy Vacation Resort, it's on Court Street and about a 4 block walk from Virginia Street, where the casinos are and you pass by Reno Provisions, Silver Peak, etc. on the way and Pegs is not far.

It was $143 a night during Hot August Nights, which is dirt cheap and the room was huge with a kitchenette. It's been renovated, it's got the old carpet smell, the stove in our kitchenette dated back to the '70s and there were spots of plumbing solder on the floor, but it was clean and secure and it was nice being off the main strip area, but still in walking distance of a lot of things.

If you can get a newer room in the off-season for the same or cheaper, I would definitely recommend it, but when it's busy, it's definitely a good deal. If they put the time and money into finishing the renovation, it will definitely be a nice place.

Thanks again everybody.
