Vortex has a 1,500 unit said to be coming out this summer, could be worth a look.
I have one of the Vortex ranger 1000 rangefinders and for the money I paid, way worth the money. I hunt with a guy that has Leica Geovid 10x42 with a built in rangefinder and he consistently can range out 200 to 300 yards further than me. But he paid $1500 and I paid $350. But every deer I have stalked has been inside of 500 yards when I shot. Thats my comfort zone, so I like my decision.

Leica is the best quality and not a bad price. I want to use a ranger 1500 and see if it's comparable to the leica.

I just got the ranger 1000 and am very pleased. It will give you what your looking for with good performance out to 500 yds. I have seen it as low as 319 on Amazon. As far as the +/- 3, that is at a distance of 1000 yds. Theoretically, that is 1.5 yds at 500, that won't change where I place the crosshairs! Bow ranges will not be affected at all and if you are seeking out to 500 yds, you will be fine. There are also 3 different settings for the reticle you can adjust based on the light conditions.

Finsandtines - that is incorrect. The +/- 3 yards is for any and all readings. Not 1000 yards. I am not saying every reading I get is 3 yards off if I try another read. I am saying that I have personally seen the variation in my backyard at ranges from 25-40 yards while ranging a black box target and a brown 3d target side by side.

In the field while ranging next to a new Nikon and a leupy 650 I am generally spot on with them (at angles and all). Just trying the help the OP decide with my experiences.

The op asked what we were using and likewise I gave my opinion on my experience. I would not have posted false/incorrect info, vortex verified that +/-3 is in fact at 1000 yds and not any and all readings and that margin of error is proportionate to the distance. Hence the "theoretically" statement. Different color targets will potentially elicit different readings as will brightness, and several other factors. If shooting today's archery equipment 1 yd is not going to change my pin placement nor my cross hairs on my rifle at 400 yds. Most rangefinders also will round up to the yd.

Overall for what he is seeking, it is a great product that I recommend. Let us know what you decide.

Thanks for the clarification Fin and for taking the time to check with Vortex on that matter.

I guess my unit must need to be sent back for repair, because I do in fact get readings varying of 3 yards at distances well below 1000 yards.

I personally used the leica 1000 for years and last year went with the vortex to give it a good test run it is not a leica but it is a great range finder we shoot long range and have never had a problem ranging out to 7-800 yards. The only 2 problems i have had with the ranger is super bright conditions the red dot can get hard to see and antelope hunting is hard on every range finder except the leica it is extremely hard to get good ranges at greater distances on antelope 600+ yards. Other then that i am a fan and like it better then leapold and nikon,Bushnell. It is great for the money they are coming out with the 1500 this year and curious to see if they have changed anything.

Thanks for all the Vortex reviews . I'm a dad with 2 little ones so I just cant spend the money on the highest quality Euro stuff . I'm going to get the Vortex Ranger 1000 . I have been super happy with all my Vortex stuff so far so I see no reason I wont be with the Ranger .

BTW the Ranger 1500 is on the website .

I have the Bushnell 1 mile rangefinder. Works great. I can get ranges at 1300 pretty easy with it. Also has angle compensation too.
