Looking for any information pertaining to unit 65 for 1st season rifle. Looks like odds of drawing a tag would be pretty good. I am unclear how this ties to unit 64? Is the tag good for either unit? How rugged is it? I've done some research and some guys say it's tough! Are there decent trails? ATV access? Been a lot of years since I've been out that way and it was no where near this area.

First off you should go to the new member section and introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about yourself.

As for the possibility of the tag being good in both units you should take a look at the 2018 guide book that is on the CP&W's web page, that will give you a lot of information. Also there are hunt planners that you can call and get a lot of information, but the vast majority of information can just be gotten from the CP&W's web pages if you dig through it.

Thanks Jim. I will check out the new member section and introduce myself. I have looked at the Colorado Big Game pdf. Near as I can tell the tag is good for either unit. From what I have found unit 64 has mostly private lands though.

In doing some reading last night on a different forum, it appears I committed a no-no and mentioned a specific unit. I apologize for that and will refrain from it going forward. I tried to find a way to delete it, but am not seeing anything that allows it.

The only problem with asking a question about a single unit is that unless someone knows about that unit you won't get any or very many responses.

I can understand that. Users of the other forum felt it brought attention to the unit mentioned and therefore potentially more applications and in turn boots on the ground. I should point out that they were not singling me out, but there was an entire thread dedicated to what I am talking about. I guess I can understand that also. I'm looking through the Colorado website and I found the Elk Hunting University section within it. It looks like I have a lot of reading to do!

I've hunted unit 65 4 times over the past 12 years. First time I got nothing, just learning the area. 2nd time I shot a decent 5x5 that jumped over onto a private ranch and landowner would not allow me to try to recover it. 3rd time I shot a cow. 4th time was last year and I didn't see a single elk on public land during the season. It's gotten significantly worse over the past 12 years. It has an over the counter 2nd season elk tag which is my guess as to why it has declined. I don't plan to return so if you want to message me I can give you more details.
