Glassing unit

Hey guys I know this may seem like an odd question, but here goes. I went on a solo trip to CO GMU 65 the Uncompahgre. It was a very successful archery hunt. I love bedding out there and hunting something very different then the woods of NH. My question is after watching all the you tube videos a guy could possibly watch I was a little disappointed I was not able to glass that much. So my ?'s are
1. Can anybody recommend an OTC elk unit that would offer more glassing?
2. Am I being an idiot and I should just hunt the area I'm in?
3. I hunted near Silverjack, is the other half of the Ump a little more open?
4. Am I being an idiot?
Thanks in advance guys. I'm a sucker for spot and stalk. Maybe I should just hunt elk in the woods and save the spot and stalk for mules. Thank you for letting me ramble.

Get on Google Earth in the areas you are looking for and look for more open terrain. You can save a heck of a lot of legwork. I tend to do a lot of research that way on new areas I intend to hunt, especially this time of year as I am looking of new spots.

Find a unit with a lot of country above timberline. Elk will be that high during archery season anyway. Get to a high spot and glass for miles.

I'd have to answer your questions by asking one. Did you find the animals? If yes then stay and just get higher or find a different angle to come at em. If no, then yes change your gameplan to cover as much glassing as possible.

I found them they were just in the thick stuff. I did spend a couple of days at altitude. I was up in and around Porspyne Basin (sp) and didn't see or hear anything. I'll keep poking around. Thanks for the info. The area I hunted was not possible to get higher. The trees ran right up to the cliffs.

43, 47, 471, 54, 55, 74, they all come to mind when thinking of hunting elk above timberline. The earlier in the season you hunt the better chance you can spot stalk them also.
