General season elk and deer hunt

I am looking at buying a general season deer and elk tag for Montana. With my job I am not able to get out there to hunt until November. I am trying to figure out a good starting place. I know that time of year it can be hard to find the elk. I am thinking the north western part of the state. I guess I am looking for any advice on that time of year.

I am from wis. I have been to colorado elk hunting 2 times. I still have not killed an elk but I have feel in love with hunting them. I love being in the mountains.
