Thought I would put it out there, REI has the Oregon 600 on sale for $250 right now, regular $400 until 11/23.

With that out of the way, is this a good unit? Who else is using the Oregons? I'm planning a trip out west next year and figured I need a good GPS and this seems like a good deal. What about battery life?

That is a good find. I'm looking for a GPS too. When I ordered my Onyx Wyoming chip a couple of weeks ago, the salesperson I was working with asked me what GPS I was going to use and I told him I was not sure. He was very knowledgeable and after asking me some questions on my intended use, he told me the Oregon 600 was probably what I would end up with.
This is the best deal I've seen. Thanks

Great deal on a good GPS unit. A friend of mine has one I got a chance to play with this fall. I really liked it. I would buy one but I really like the Garmin Rino 655T that is basically the same unit with a radio and a few more gadgets including being able to locate other folks on the map if they are also using a Rino. But it also costs around $600!

Since Garmin dropped the price that low, they're discontinuing that model or updating it. Great deal though, but makes me wonder what the new model features will be.

That's exactly what I thought...........However, REI is the only retailer offering a price that low that I've seen. The best deal I found was at GPSnation for something like $347 dollars. Could be REI is just shakin the tree.
Don't know why Garmin would screw with the 600 model. If more bells and whistles are desired, move up to the 650.

I went ahead and picked it up over the weekend on impulse. Very nice unit, stock maps are worthless but that's easy to upgrade. It's a little heavy from my perspective, around 8 oz, but it's much better than my 10 year old etrek. I look forward to using it, and worst case since I bought from REI, if anything goes wrong I just return it no questions asked.
