I just picked up a manfrotto 190 pro 3 tripod off craigslist and now I'm trying to figure out what head would be best for me. I would like to go to a couple camera stores to check out some options. What do you guys like? Fluid or pan head?

I have a fluid pan head and a pan head. Both are to heavy to carry. I use a pistol grip type ball head now much lighter. I think The pans are good from the truck or short ventures but to much weight for long trips.

I've had problems with my fluid head getting extremely stiff when it's below 20*F, Pan heads seem to do better in the colder temps. Both are heavy and I only use them on day hunts, any type of backpack hunt I'm using a ball head. No matter what you get make sure it has quick release plates!!

Nice, good tips guys. Im looking at the vanguard ph 31 and promaster 6160. I know they are kind of heavy pan heads but i think im willing to take the trade off. Any of you guys have experience with these heads

Just an update to the thread, I picked up a vanguard ph-111v today which is a fluid head but only weighs in at 14 ounces so I like the trade off. I will post thoughts after I play with it a little bit.
