I was just finishing up packing this weekend (leaving in about a week). Thought I'd throw in a fish pole & some tackle. For trout in the streams and reservoirs on the eastern side of the Bighorns, I was thinking light or ultralight poles and some smaller spinners -- would that be about right? Or something a little heavier? Also, I've seen some restrictions on live bait in certain streams, is that in effect most places out there?

Just quickly looking through the Area 3 fishing regs. I only saw that the Tongue River, Bull Creek, and Muddy Guard Res. had bait restrictions, so everywhere else is ok. The Tongue River is a blue ribbon river or some such thing, so they like to keep up the numbers and size. They are trying to help Bull Creek recover I think, too. The other areas like Clear Creek and Middle Fork of the Powder River I will just drown worms a lot of times, but the ultralight with spinners work fine, too. Those little one foot wide creeks as you go up the road from Buffalo are surprisingly good for brookies I think. For the reservoirs you might want to bring something a little heavier, just to buck the wind and get your bait out there and not have it blow back onto shore, lol. That's my plan for this afternoon after I quit procrastinating on the honey do's.

Thank you for the advice. I've been kind of eyeing Crazy Woman Creek coming out of the national forest if I find myself with some extra time at the end of the trip. I saw that blue-ribbon designation on something west of Kaycee, and had never seen it before. Nothing better than fresh trout.

Lol, that's a good one ivorytip! There is one behind every tree, both of them. That is how the creek got its name, the Indians would stay away from this lady's cabin on that creek because she was "touched". At least that is the story I heard.
