First Wyoming hunt

Well I figured I'd post an update to my first Wyoming mule deer/antelope hunt. I know a lot of guys thought I was crazy for doing a 2 unit species hunt with 6 guys having never hunted the west. I am glad we went with the original plan. We hunted zone 16 antelope region C deer. We were certainly not trophy hunting but we also didn't shoot the first thing that walked by. We just finished up day 4 of the hunt and everyone in the group with the exception of one is tagged out. Unit 16 is a tough area with some tough terrain but the deer and antelope are around. The night before opening day myself and a friend hiked almost 2 miles into BLM land and camped out so we'd get a jump on animals moving in the morning. I shot a nice buck antelope at 410 yards from ridge to ridge and my hunting partner took a decent 3x3 muley. After that the kills just kept coming. We took 6 animals in the first 2 days and another 5 on day 4. If you're willing to hike in and pack your meat out then you shouldn't have a hard time in this area. The hiking isn't easy often times going up one hillside just to go down the other side to climb the next one. Antelope were best hunted by glassing them from a distance and moving in for the stalk, where muleys were best hunted by getting on a ridge and moving in and out of ravines to get them to jump up and run. The weather was a little screwy with the first couple of days in the 80s then day 3 and 4 were in the low 50s with crazy high winds (35 mph gusts). I'll post pictures as I get more.

I thought about trying this but trying to solo a first combo hunt would prove extremely difficult I feel. It is definitely disheartening when you can't get anyone motivated for a western hunt. Congratulations though!

Steve don't sell yourself short, after being out here its definitely doable as a solo hunt if you can't find anyone. I am not stingy with spots if you want info on where to go for muleys and antelope shoot me a pm. I can't promise trophies, but where we went there's a really good chance you're going to get shooting. You'll have to work for it though.

Congrads on filling a bunch of tags. I will be doing the same next year with a buddy. Both of us are not afraid of putting in a lot of work. Good to see it can be done. We are planning to allow 11 to 12 days of hunting.

Thanks Bob, it would have been worth it just to see that country. Tagging out was an added bonus. Buffalo/Gillette area is a one of a kind place. We drove over to Big Horn Wednesday night and must've seen 300 whitetail with some of the biggest bucks any of us has ever seen. Truly God's country out there.

That's awesome, great work. I like that you just went for it. Now your hooked for sure though! I started going out of state in the early 90's, starting much like you guys did. I've tried to fit at least 2 out of state hunts per year every since:), Congrats!

Congratulations!!! I got the western hunting bug last year. I talked my brother into going antelope hunting. And here in two more days we'll be heading back to Wyoming for our first combo hunt. Mule deer in Region Y and Antelope in area 21. I can't wait. We plan to hunt antelope from the camper then hike into the Ed O Taylor for a backpack camp trip.

Bring warm clothes and a warm sleeping bag maninthemaze, there was snow in that country over the weekend and just received more over the past days.

You guys did a great job, congratulations. We didn't think you were crazy, we just didn't want you to put to much on your plate and have a bad hunt. I bet you learned a bunch of do's & dont's so your next hunt is even better
