First Western Hunt

Alright... So I have a set of dates, but no unit yet. My buddy and I plan to leave out 12/13 and drive over, hunting 12/15-12/20. We are both looking for a legal mule deer. No preconceived notions that either of us are going to put down a P&Y on out first trip, but I would like to see deer.

We have been looking through Google maps, on here, and reading everything we can get our hands on but have not been able to nail down a particular unit yet. Could anyone point me in the right direction? I don't want coordinates or roads or specifics hills (Unless someone wants to supply them, in which case I would be eternally grateful), but any unit information would be awesome. I have read that some units are better for Elk and Coues, while others hold more Mulies. He has looked hard at Unit 22, but all I've seen is there are few mule deer, but they are big.

Any other units we should consider in that area or in the S/SE/E portions of the state?

Thanks ahead for any information!

I've never hunted AZ, but I know a few on here have. Unfortunately many folks are out hunting right now.
Be patient while waiting as well as continue to google search units on this forum and others.
Being it's your first hunt, enjoy the entire experience. Tagging an animal is a bonus. Good luck and report back!

Haven't hunted muleys in az, only coues and javelina.
The Az website itself has very useful info on every region and unit for every species.
At least it did several years ago when I was going.

You need to narrow down the unit that you want to hunt and see if there are even any permits left for the hunt that you are looking at. Your dates will be in the mule deer rut and that is a premium hunt and all the archery permits may be sold. I did a quick search on the Arizona Game and Fish web site and didn't see any left over permits for deer.

You also might want to call their office and see what they might suggest.

Archery tags are OTC (literally) and are not subject to the draw (except for units north of the Grand Canyon & 3AC). There are several decent units in the eastern portion.....just pick a unit and research it on the G&F website. Might want to look unto leftover Javelina tags in the same unit???
