I am planning a elk hunt for this fall to Colorado. I was wondering what is the best unit to try to hunt that has otc tags.
Thanks for any help.

If you go with 54, I'd reccomend going guided or doing a drop camp. We hunted it on foot and ATV for 6 days last year and saw one bull a mile and a half across a canyon. That said he was a very nice bull.

I don't know if there are any "best units" for over-the-counter elk tags. All OTC elk units have good elk populations. It is a matter of getting familar with the area you choose. You will need to know where the elk are at the time of year you'll be there and of course, where the private property lines are.
This is a good time to be a elk hunter. There are more elk now than ever. I'm a deer hunter and I see legal bulls every year I hunt in Colorado.
I have not hunted units 80 or 81. My bet would be anywhere in the White River National Forest. This is the home to the largest elk herd in the state.
Good Luck Moose

I might be of some help. I moved from Russellville to Searcy about ten years ago. I have a house/cabin in unit 81 and spend a lot of time in both units. A good hunt in these units depends on when you will be there and how you plan to hunt, backpack, motel, or camp. Both units recieve a lot of pressure during rifle season.
The forest service rents a cabin near Summitville. I have stayed there and hunted about 6 miles away behind the mine toward Elephant Mt. The USFS cabin is Elwood cabin. This is high country, 11,700 ft. Wrightman Fork can be worked top to bottomwith two autos, the bottom along the Alamosa river has too much non-resident hunting pressure. Saddle Creek and that side of Conejos Peak is for the tough hunter, you will be the only one in Saddle Creek. Sheep herders will use the pastures just above Saddle Creek.
Send me a PM if you need to.
