Well we are submerged in the dawg days of winter and the extra plates at turkey day and xmas are starting to catch up to me! Started hitting the gym with dreams of packing out some horn this fall and soon got very bored with the normal workouts, lets hear some the favorites as i know this group of individuals with have some good insulation burners! I can start if off...

Half hour on the bike, varying the levels of resistance to keep the burn alive jumping off every ten minutes to max out on push-ups.

During the week I get lots of exercise at work(carpentry) plus I walk 6km most evenings and on weekends I get out on the snowshoes(when there is enough snow) or crosscountry skies for 2-4 hrs. When there is not enough snow down in the valley I head out for a hike and make sure I do a route that is steep and gets me to a nice view point. I seem to need to spend at least 4-5 hrs outside moving everyday to feel right, luckily in my job I often spend twice that outside and where I live is right in the Kootenays so finding steep and scenic is not hard.

Winter is my hardest time to work out for some reason, I do try to hit up at least 45 mins of cardio 4 times per week with some mediocre weight training. Once spring gets here Im turkey hunting, hiking, working a lot outside and we usually take the dog for a few mile walk 3 times per week.

My 12oz curls are dwindling this time of year, because I usually run low on Moose Drool! Gotta resupply in the fall!!!!

This year my goal was to make going uphill with a pack more of a strength than a weakness. Elk hunting in Idaho this past October and hearing multiple elk bugling just up above me in steep heavy timber was a wake up call for me. Knowing what and where I needed to to be doing and going just did not happen for me like it should have. On a good note, it was what I needed to get me motivated me to get in better shape.

So since October, every morning during my work week I start in the gym with revolving stairs with a weighted pack filled with granite gravel, and a treadmill at 15% grade with the same pack. I monitor my heart rate to keep it up and listen to the iPod to help keep me moving. That gives me a good sweat. It has been a good pre morning workout to some weight lifting afterwards, alternating muscle groups each day on the weights. I’ve dropped close to 30 pounds, eating more healthy as well and since October my weekend hill climbs going up 1000 ft elevation when I fit one in with the weighted pack are so much easier.

I like to run. Done a few half marathons and fulls. I just started hunting the West about three years ago and thought that running would be enough. It is, but the stress you put on your body is a lot different.

One thing that I found very beneficial is cross fit. I did it before we hit the hills of New Mexico, and I have never been more fit for a hunt. Just Google it and you can find tons of stuff

Run 2 miles on the treadmill, then walk 1 mile with elevation maxed out, then run 1 more mile, all while jamming out to the Shinedown channel on pandora.

I've been doing p90x off and on for a few years. Its a great workout and really gets a guy into shape. It gets kind of tough to fit an hour of working out into the everyday schedule but after doing it a few times and taking breaks from it life is better when you're doing it.

i was doing p90x then hated to workout for an hour plus so i tried T25 and love it but going to add p90x in to try to build more muscle.

I pickup, load and unload kegs and cases of beer all day everyday during the week...winter job at a beer distributor...Plus throw in 3-4 days of weight training at a gym a week and I'm coming out of winter in the best shape I've been in. When i got out of fall guiding season i did two months of insanity, its a great workout, but like said above, it got repetitive and long. When i disappear into the hills all summer and fall for my pack trips and hunting camp, i don't get the chance to hit the weights anymore, but working constant 16 hour days has its own way of keeping off the fat. . I have a TRX training system that i plan on packing along on my trips to get in body weight workouts. If you haven't seen the TRX its an awesome training system that can go just about anywhere you do. I just hang it from a tree limb in the middle of the wilderness and i have a great workout system 100 miles from the closest gym.
