Exotics

A post on another forum has got me thinking again about the "exotics",oryx, audad and ibex in New Mexico.
I have found a fair amount of info on the oryx. I understand that they are mainly hunted on the military base, but not much info on the other two.

In general is it possible to do DIY hunt for any of the three? Do they frequent public land or are they found mainly on private.

I see that the Ibex is a once in a life time tag, so would not want to waste it.

Any info would be appreciated. Depending on what I hear, thinking of applying next year.

On range oryx are a blast definately put in for that hunt. It is easily diy. Off range oryx is a total crap shoot. You can go for days without spotting anything and then all of a sudden you find one and have to try and make something happen.

Don't know much about aoudad or ibex hunting other than the largest hurddle you must first overcome is the draw odds. Maybe they are better with an outfitter than diy, check the NMG&F website for the odds. Tags are mucho $ too.

At least for the Oryx look into landowner tags, they are looked down upon as pests by the ranchers around the missle range, the landowner tags frequently go for the same price as the draw tags??? Makes no sense to me but might make it easier to get a tag for out of stater. My buddy got an Ibex on a DIY last year and it is doable. God bless

Had a youth hunt for my son on the White Sands Missle range for mule deer, quite a few years ago. Oryx were much like Antelope, easy to spot, but not always easy to stalk. But it appeared to be a high success hunt to me. They looked larger then big mulies and smaller than elk, on average. My brother drew a tag and had a ball. I'd recommend trying them. I have not drew so far, but one never knows.

Thanks for the info guys. I think that I will start looking a little more seriously at the Oryx and start applying next year.
