Out of curiosity, I just weighed by old alaskan frame pack at 6lbs for the frame alone. With the bag added it came in at 11.2lbs. I believe it is this one:
I believe mine is the original model. Here is an image that was posted on Bowsite in a thread about these packs. This shows how the straps attach to rails between the frame, with adjustment buttons top and bottom to adjust for torso length. They also have different holes in the frame to adjust for shoulder width. Newer models attach right to the frame. This shows my pack, color and strap attachment. My rails are straight though, as I don't think it has carried much.
Wish pack guys were as obsessed with posting pictures as gun guys are.
I believe this pack was purchased in the 90's. I only met the guy for a couple minutes, he told me he bought this pack from Cabelas, and hunted elk in Colorado, and no longer used it. Found the picture I posted earlier, and several conversations that led me to believe this is the very early model of the Alaskan.
