Elk units in NEW MEXICO

Looking for recommendations for DIY units in New Mexico during the rut. Thanks

It is getting harder and harder to draw tags as a non-resident in New Mexico.

Check draw odds. The harder to draw, the better the area. There aren't a lot of secrets left in limited entry tags.

Do not apply for Unit 9 Mount Taylor area. When you look at the draw odds, they are great but just got off the 2nd archery elk hunt there and did not even see a cow to shoot. We put up game cameras on watering holes and no signs of elk going into water. Unfortunately, we were not the only hunters with this luck. Very few elk spotted and killed. In my opinion the unit needs to be shut down till game amounts build up again.

Unit 9 sucks. The few elk there are are all up on Mt. Taylor and only when the weather gets nasty do they get pushed down....and then they get poached on the rez. Maybe there's better luck on the north side, but I paid for a private land cow tag last year and blanked on a 35,000 acre spread!
