I had a rude awakening this weekend, the elk aren?t where I left them. I spent most of the late September archery season hunting the wilderness off of forrest service road 17 and saw a lot of elk. Passed on some smaller bulls and chased around a monster 6x6, but did not take a 60 yard shot. Just did not have a good feeling about it. I missed the rifle opener due to drill weekend. I went back up to the mountains this past weekend to the same area and there was no fresh sign what so ever. No fresh tracks, no droppings. No elk. It was cold, but no snow to speak of. This is my first season hunting elk in Wyoming, so not a lot of experience to go on. Have the elk started moving out of the bighorns yet? I only have one weekend of hunting left as I have drill again on the closing weekend. The Marine Corps is killing my hunting season. Any advice about hunting the unit would be appreciated. Should I be looking at the BLM at lower elevations? I spent the lot of time scouting the wilderness but not a lot in the lower portions of the unit. Archery season was about a big bull, now it is about filling the freezer. Any advice would be appreciated. If I am unable to connect this weekend is anyone able to recommend a good general area for a late season cow tag?
