A buddy and I decided we would burn our points this year. Together we average 5.5 and we have applied for unit 19 after some research and narrowing it down to a unit we believe we can draw that has reasonable public access. We are going DIY and plan to hunt for a week with bows in September and if unsuccessful, we will rifle hunt starting November 1st. Does anyone have experience in unit 19? The quality is supposedly up. What can we expect in terms of opportunity. What about the Muddy Mountain HMA? Is the public ground better or worse? Where should we concentrate our efforts? We are definitely getting older and can't get around as well as in the glory days. What are the roads like? How far should we expect to walk in for best results? Any help is appreciated.

I'd be researching an area regarding the questions you pose long before I ever applied for it. 19 is a good area. Unfortunately there are access issues outside of the HMA. The HMA produces good elk, but it also gets hammered due to excessive pressure. Especially during the archery season when the type 1 & 2 guys are hunting at the same time...

I had looked at 19 also but like Triple BB said, the access seems tricky there. Sounds like some great bulls come out of there though.

As the others have said, a pretty tough unit to access. The reports I have from guys that know it very well is the quality has been on the decline the past few years, but still good.
