I'm still pretty green on the elk hunting front and just trying to understand why unit 11 is a LQ tag and the surrounding units are any elk general. Is the habit in 11 that much better? I've hunted unit 10 directly next to it and it doesn't really seem a lot different? Just trying to learn more about elk and why elk prefer some areas over others.

Just taking a guess here- Unit 11 is a staging area for the winter migration for a large number of elk. Hunting pressure pushes these elk on to private ground quickly. By limiting hunter numbers, they keep more elk on the forest during the hunting season.

Even if it's not a lot different the G&F has set up LQ tags in various spots to limit hunter numbers for various reasons. What was mentioned previously may be the reason or it may be just so there is an area down there to have a quality hunt so the unit isn't like a zoo the way some areas are!

I'd call the Biologist in Laramie and see what they have to say. HT has a good theory.
I'd guess they will say something about management objectives.
I'd be interested in what you find out.

(Thats a lot of I'ds)

I was told it went to lq due to the unit being a little easier to access/hunt and there were bigger crowds in that area. Trophy potential in surrounding units isn't really different just less roads and more timber which leads to a harder hunt in the surrounding general units.
