I shoot mostly a 30 year old model 70 lightweight chambered in 280 Rem. I have taken 7 different species of big game with it. I shoot 150 gr Nosler partitions for elk and 140 gr Sierra Gamekings for everything else. I have a Leupold 2-7X scope on it; if I can't make the shot with the scope at 7X I need to get closer. I have a newer model 70 in 300WSM but my 280 is my favorite rifle.

I've only hunted for cow elk and shot a grand total of two. One with a 7MM Rem Mag- 140 gr Partition and one with a .30-06 165 gr Accubond. Both worked fine

"Better to have a non-magmum in the boiler room than a marginal shot from a magnum"

Great point that gets glossed over a ton.

This is the very reason I went with a .308 for my new rifle. My thinking is that I will be able to shoot it more confidently than I would a magnum caliber. Knowing my limitations shooting I don't envision taking many shots over 350 yards anyways and I feel the .308 is more than enough at that range.

Now hopefully I can actually use it on an elk this year!!

Been using a Remington 710 in 270 ca bought from Walmart 20 years ago. It has been very accurate and have gotten about 20 elk with it. After the scope fogged, that gun is now the backup. I went to a Smith & Wesson I-Bolt in 30-06 and very pleased with the accuracy of that rifle. Not a common rifle, great barrel, adjustable trigger, one piece scope rail. Tried 7MM but the recoil had me shooting less accurate. Most important for me is confidence in knowing where the bullet is going to hit. Use Remington Corelok ammo.

Remington Sendero 7mm RUM running hand loaded 139 gr GMX's at 3,625 fps. I always wanted the .284 Lazzaroni, but could not afford it.... I absolutely love my RUM and how it performs on all the critters I hunt. I also had a Timney flat trigger installed at 2 pounds. It's topped with a Burris Black Diamond 30 mm tube 4-16x50.

Loveland, CO. was AZ.
In our house rifles that have knocked down elk are:
7mm-08 shooting Accubond LR 168g
.270 Winchester shooting Accubond 140g
.30-06 shooting Accubond 165g
All absolutely capable cartridges.
Good luck!

My father-in-law has two of these guns just like this. He has killed a lot of stuff with them and they are very accurate.

I hunt everything from jackrabbits to elk with my Rem. 7mm mag. 175 grain bullets for elk and 150 for everything else. It's been deadly on every elk I have ever shot except for the one I missed. I've never needed more gun or thought it was too much. Not bad on recoil either.
My son used the wife's Rem. 270 with great results as well using 150 grain bullets.

I really like my Ruger 7mm Rem Mag shooting hand loaded 160gr Barnes bullets. It is a very good, flat shooting gun that doesn't kick too bad and is plenty of gun for an elk.

340 Weatherby, 225gr@3100fps. Is my ultimate elk rifle...

However, I have a 300win.mag. which I actually plan to pickup a lighter weight do-all .300 WSM rifle. plan to shoot 150 or 165 TTSX type bullets.

Magnum rifles are heavy/heavier, and I think for myself at least, aren't essential, especially if a lot of mountain hiking etc...

I'm planning on eventually getting a semi-light/normal weight rifle in 270win, or 280rem/ackley, as a do all.

I think for most 1 of those 3 options are an ideal choice... to each their own.

btw, a .338win.mag shooting lighter bullets(185-210grs) is a solid option and only needs a 22inch barrel IMO.

I've shot them with a lot of rifles, 243, 6mm, 30/06, 338, 7 RM, 300 WM, and 7-08...shot some with arrows too.

The last 30 or so, almost exclusively 7 RM or 7-08.

Mostly use the 7-08 these days.

Putting my 6mm back together after I get it back from pacnor...I reckon it will see some elk action by this time next year.

For straight up cool factor, the last elk I killed with a 30/06 was with my Dad's pre-64 model 70. My Grandfather, Dad, and I all have killed deer, elk and pronghorn in Montana with the same rifle...this elk completed the tri-fecta. My late Grandfather also shot a MT grizzly with it as well.

Those are the best rifles! The ones with storied family history!

I have been using my ole pre 64 model 70 in 270 forever. It wears a D'Arcy Echols legend stock since the wood stock got beat up on my sheep hunt. I blame Jack O'Connor.
