Anyone know the dimensions of an average bull elk rear quarter, or have experience with Caribou game bags? I used the stretchy Alaskan game bags last time, and wasn't all that impressed.. Was considering either the Carnivore II, or the High Country sets of game bags from Caribou gear.
The high country set contains 22x40 bags, which would obviously fit a bone in rear quarter..
The Carnivore bags are 21x24, which seems a little short for a bone in quarter, and would be better served for bone out meat, which I won't do.
Just to give myself more options, the Muley version of the high country contains 20x34 bags, which would seem sufficient for a quarter?

Kinda wish I would have measured those quarters now.. Any thoughts, analysis, or expert opinions on the world of top end game bags?

Do you plan on boning it out or leaving the skin and bone intact and packing out the whole qtr? I use the Alaskan Elk bags on all our meat but we de-bone, citric acid spray the meat, cool and then place it in the bags.

I bought the 5 bag set of 24" x 44" "T.A.G. Bags" from Pristine Ventures in Fairbanks Alaska. We used them on two large elk (large bodied bull and a HUGE cow). They come with a tough stuff sack that I can actually get them fallback into after using them (snug fit). I have never used bags in the past and I love love love these bags. This set should last for years.

I bought both the TAG bag and the Elk "Magnum" set from Caribou Gear.

Both perform the task a game bag is designed for well.

THE CG bags come with more bells and whistles like Reflective tabs, and bag labels, and small Camp meat, Cape and trimming bags.

They Fit our Bone in Gutless elk quarters just fine. 28x 48 were the Quarter bag size,

The Tag bags were just 5 bags of the same size, 28x60 inch. It was a smaller package. More bare bones.

BOTH WORKED FINE.

I have the 5pc Caribou Wapiti bags, they're more than big enough. Two trips thru the washer with a dollip of vinegar and they're fresh as a spring day.

I've used the Caribou Carnivore bags. They are tough, compact, and clean up easily. So far that one set has packed out three elk and five mule deer. I do bone out the meat, and swear by the citrus spray, as if flat out works to keep the flies off. The cheesecloth type bags are pretty much throw-aways. I have been with others who bought the large canvas bags. Due to their size, they were left in camp and we didn't have them when we needed them.

Ditto, on the Tagg bags, we used them on several animals this year then put them in the washing machine and hang to dry. They are very tough, cool the meat fast and very lightweight for carrying in the day pack. I've heard good things about Alaska and Carnivore, but have not used them personally.

The TAG bags and Caribou bags are fairly comparable as to material (synthetic), strength, and weight. I have sets of both manufacturer's bags and like them both. Caribou bags are a little easier to come by if you have a Sportsman's Warehouse or Cabelas in your area. I have never found the TAG bags locally and have always had to order them from the Pristineventures website that Umpqua Hunter provided. The Carnivore line of Caribou bags you mentioned are designed for boned out quarters so they won't work for you. If buying from the Caribou line, you would need the medium sized quarter single bags, the medium Magnum package, or the Wapiti set WalitiBob has to fit your bone in quarters...

I just got another set of Caribou Gear Medium Bags at our RMEF dinner Saturday. They were in the Silent auction and I got them for less than Retail.

I used the Carnivore II last year for bone in quarters. No problem at all.
