Elk Mounts

I just got back from an elk hunt with my father and 2 close friends. We were able to harvest 2 nice bulls, in my opinion. My dad being the type of guy that appreciates and understands what goes into harvesting the animal wants us to shoulder mount them both. He shot a nice 5x6 bull last year that he put on the wall. Its not a giant but we were 6 miles in, on our own with no direction from anyone when he shot him. Couldnt have been more proud to share the moment with my dad and watch him harvest his first bull. This year was the same circumstance 100% DIY. 12.5 hours to get them out. Here are a couple pictures of our elk. I know everyone has they own opinion on a "trophies" but these are trophies to me. More so because of the story than the animal.

With all that said, what are your guys' thoughts? And does anyone have any cool/different ideas of what to do with my broken beam bull?

Hard to tell how much was broken off the 1 bull?

taxidermist could probably build that antler back up... even if a lot is missing, or you could just mount it as is... sometimes a European mount is a good option, ie just the skull and antlers as they are...

He Was broke off about 5" above his G2 on the right side. The G2 on the left side broke on his slide down the mountain, I luckily found it and will have it repaired. im leaning towards euro mount and possibly dipping it but have never seen one in person. I know a guy that used wood stain on the skull and that turned out awesome. Just looking for something different.

Shoulder mount em both. Don’t fix the antler, that’s not how you shot him. Print out good 8x10s and frame em.
Those are true trophies man!! DIY with your dad, doesn’t get much better than that!!

Very nice and I agree. I will say that European mounts look great and look at getting a "Skull Hooker" to display them. They are effective, simple, and look great!!

Thanks for the positive feedback guys. Thats what I like about this forum, most everyone is respectable. The 5x5 is going on the wall with his shoulders. I am going to Euro my bull. Couple reasons, 1) wall space is limited, 2) little something to keep the fire buring for next year to go after another one. Hopefully one with both side in tact. I will post pics when we get them back.

Got my elk back! Along with a very special picture of my dad and I. As an only child, my dad is my best friend. Being able to share these moments of my first elk this year and his first bull last year mean the world to me! Happy New Year everyone, I hope you all had a blessed holiday season!
