I’ve hunted 61 quite a few times with family members and friends and it’s awesome country but depending on the season and where the elk are it can be very rough, steep terrain. Hunting the elk from the top down on large steep canyons. I hunted it with my dad a few years ago and he was in his mid-60’s and in damn good shape for his age but it was tough. The elk were deep in the canyons and we didn’t end up getting an elk. We had a great hunt but in hindsight I would have had him hunt a different unit. Like I said it’s awesome country but in my opinion from what you guys are describing, I’d line up an outfitter with horses.

I contacted several outfitters 6 months ago and they are all booked for 2022. I also have been there, but just scouting. Probabbly not in the cards for this year, altho I can draw it.

I have hunted 61 several times for deer and had an early season elk tag in 2017 and went with family on another elk hunt a couple years ago. As Kodiak32 said it is steep country and the elk are in the canyons. If you draw let me know and I can point you in a couple directions. Horses or several young strong helpers is the way to go.
