I have a friend who is wanting to get her husband a muzzleloader hunt for elk in 2017. I have never hunted with an outfitter, and would love to hear some recommendations of good places to check out. It will be on a budget, and he has no points in any state, which makes it a little tougher. I appreciate any help that I can get, they are good folks, and I know this is one of his dreams!

There are outfitters in all the states that will offer muzzle loader hunts but for the lower budget minded don't expect much.

Once you decided on a state just Google "guided elk hunts (enter the state)" Then start doing a lot of homework on the outfitter. Don't just go by the references that they list on their web sites but start using your phone and talking to people.

When I did my grizzly hunt in British Colombia I emailed a number of references and asked if it would be alright if I called them and if it was OK to do it then what their numbers were. Of the dozen or so emails that I sent out I received about 90% of them back. Then I started calling. I talked to people ranging from a sweet lady that was on a lot of hunting shows down to a person that had saved for years for his hunt. A couple of business owners and a few others where this was a once in a lifetime hunt. Write up a list of the expectations that you want on the hunt and then ask the questions

I did all this before I placed my deposit and signed the contract.

Without some points Colorado could be tough for a non resident.

New Mexico's draw is done without points but it could also be a tough draw due to its popularity.

You might want to broaden the area with Montana and Idaho.

Montana or Idaho might be a good option with no points might be your best bet. Otherwise a landowner tag in Nevada or Utah but you will be looking in the $5-10k just for the tag.
