Out of curiosity, if you had a elk tag for 1 of the units that were involved in the Elk Fire, would you request a refund & get a additional PP or settle for a reservation in the same unit for next year, thx

It all depends on just what was burnt, the condition of the area, along with if they are going to allow you into the area.

Most fires are not a scorched earth type of fire but they jump around leaving green areas that the animals will flock to for shelter. If it was long enough ago, even a couple of months you will see new growth that deer and elk love to munch on.

Way back in 2002 there was a huge fire in the Utah Book Cliffs. My brother in law had a elk tag for the unit. On our scouting trips we found deer and elk living in the ashes munching on the fresh shoots that were coming up out of the ash. There were even a number of bears that were feeding on the animals that didn't make it out.

Do the PP, see how it shakes out point wise across the state for a year. Lots of things will have ripple effects for a few years.

Call the biologist for that area and ask him if the elk will move back into the burned area, Some of these outfitters website's I see pics of big bulls taken in burn areas so who knows?
