Long time lurker throwing out my first post Drew an area 30 late elk tag. Hunted deer in Idaho a few years ago. Gonna give elk hunting a try. Hoping folks might have a few pointers. I know the area is somewhat weather dependent. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Need snow for elk from Montana to move in. Unit is a fun hunt, but quality has fell off last few years. Anything over 300, you probably should shoot.

Thanks for the welcomes an dinfo. Was gonna check into the wolf tag situation closer to the hunt. Plan on going over 10 days about the third week of Nov. Any suggestions on places to start would be appreciated. Still need to make some calls to the forestry and fish & game folks.

NR wolf tag is $34! I know you can get atleast 2 but it could be more. Im not sure about 30 but a few areas have a quota so it would be a good idea to check on that first.

Was wondering how your hunt went. I was thinking about putting in for that hunt in the future but never hunted over there and was not familiar with it. Any feed back your willing to tell would greatly appreciated.

Saw a lot of elk and shot a decent 5x5. Passed on a couple that were a bit bigger the second and thirds days of the hunt. The only 6pts I saw were on private property closer to Salmon one morning. Ran into quite a few hunters all asking the same, where were the big bulls. One local said he'd been putting in for 20 years and had hunted close to two weeks and couldn't find a good bull. Some were saying they were still in Montana. Kinda hard to believe you'd have that many elk in the area with a few big bulls staying in Montana. Especially when there was quite a bit of snow up high and the season in Montana had been going on for quite awhile. Very weather dependent hunt. I've hunted better general season areas in Wyoming...

Congrats on the bull! Lets see some pics! Never under estimate how long those big bulls will holdout in deep snow, they got that big for a reason!

thanks triple BB for the info I will keep that in mind if I decide to put in for that unit. was there any problem with access to public land or was that why you ran into a lot of people was everyone hunting on the same piece of public land. If you have pictures I would love to see them.
