I just recentley moved to the helena,Mt area, so this will be my first year bowhunting in MT...Ive always bowhunted in Idaho, Some people here have been saying you have to hunt around 8000ft to be into elk aournd here so thought id get some opinions! So In montana do the elk stay typically in the high country during the first parts of semptember or will they move down or if even if there is any realationship with elevation and finding elk in early september.

Any Insight would greatly be appreciated!!!

I've found elk at or above 9000 and lower than 7000. they go where the best grass is and the time of year and weather play a big part as well

So true...no science to it. Some basics, but once you think you have them figured out, it all changes. Finding them is most important. If your wondering if they are where you are, look for tracks, droppings, and trashed brush and trees. If your not seeing these things, its time to relocate.

Agreed..So many people make the mistake of hunting a "Good" area that they saw elk in once day after day and never find any fresh sign. I'll give an area a half day. If I'm not at least into some fresh sign, I'm outta there and over the next ridge. I'd start high and get off the beaten path..talk to some locals or the Game wardens. they may be helpful. Good luck.
