I have never hunted in grizzly country. However my son shot an elk in the coast range and we left it overnight. Temp. was well below freezing and we skinned it, left it whole on the hide and left it overnight. Judging from the tracks a very large black bear found it during the night. It ate almost the entire gut pile and part of one shoulder and neck. Now we just do not leave them. Usually they get broken down and boned in the field. Sometimes we don't get back to the truck until the small hours of the morning. In hot weather it is very important to get the bone out and hang the meat where it can air out well. If the body heat is out it will easily last a day in hot weather. Anything longer and you are asking for trouble. I don't relax until it is all cut, wrapped, and frozen. BB

I just watched a show called "Beyond Rubicon" for the first and last time. One of the hunters shot a cow elk with a bow at last light. He says
"I made a great shot and we found lots of blood". They bumped the animal twice while looking for his arrow. After it got dark they left for the night. It must have been pretty warm because they were wearing very light clothing. When they found it the next day it was evident when they were gutting it that the animal had been gut shot. How much meat was salvagable I don't know.
If that's what they call a great shot I don't need to watch that show.

It's amazing how many shows are absolute garbage. Says a lot about what we "hunters" like to see. Pretty disappointing.

That's why I watch very few of them!
Very, very few! My wife asked me why I don't watch hunting shows when she knows how much I like hunting. I just tell her I can't relate most of them. The majority of them are just trying to peddle products. They have zero respect for the hunt or the animal.

As far as leaving them overnight, I've done it once. It was a bad shot, gut. I found the bull the next morning as soon as the sun came up. It was the right call that time. When I bow hunt elk solo, I don't hunt evenings. I just don't want to deal with the possibility of loosing one in the dark.

They could at least admit it when the make a bad shot. I know most of us have made a less than perfect shot before.

I remember years ago, a few different groups were camping in a similar area and worrying about a fellow hunter who wasn't back til very late.

The next day we found out he had been out late cutting up his elk in the dark to cool it down, I think he got back at midnight or after, we helped him pack out some meat the next day.

So many of these shows I can't even watch anymore, Eastmans' tends to be one of the shows I catch myself watching however.

Some of these shows are more than half the time interviews with hunters and the hosts opinions on hunting etc... like actors/models talking about this and that and about 5-10mins of actual hunting/animal time.
