Posted this in the mule deer section with no activity so thought I would try here. I know this is mostly a DIY place and I am a mostly DIY guy but this is one I think a lot of experience (that I will not be able to get) would be worth paying for. Anybody bump into an outfit that could help?

"I've got 10 points and would like to use them so I can start archery hunting CO every other year. I'd consider doing this one guided as I think advanced scouting would be key and I'm not in the position to do that from Michigan. Do any of you know any outfits that specialize in the high country early rifle hunts--either guiding or hauling you in and dropping you off?"

Once you have a unit picked out, or a set of units.... you can use this site as a starting point. You can call up the different outfits that are licensed in the units you want to hunt. Once you narrow it down to 2 or 3, come back and post to see if anyone has hunted with those outfitters. You can usually do a google search as well to get good info.

Go to "Find your outfitter" - type in the unit, and get started.

Hah. I thought I was narrowing down the units by going with early rifle

Thanks for the replies and PMs. I'll continue digging.

If I were going to pay for a guide, I would hunt private on the Eastern plains and those units usually take less points (unless you just want the high country experience). Look at Scott Limmer with Comanche Wilderness Outfitters. I have not followed him for years, but they used to have an awesome record on big deer.

Thanks UH, I actually talked to Scott yesterday. He is booked until 2018 and is just doing the eastern plains. I'll think about that after I use up these 10 points burning a hole in my pocket...I do like the high country though.

They do get some monster TF bucks in the eastern plains. There are other outfitters out east you may want to investigate but it sounds like you may want to go high alpine. One consideration in regard to Colo's high alpine country is there generally is a lot of country with fairly low concentrations of deer. You'll have to find the few pockets of bucks that exist. Obviously your guide should already have a feel for this.

Colo's high alpine is some of the most scenic country to hunt available so I can understand why you want to do this! I would take note of the opening and closing dates of the season. Muley bucks in Sept often head to the trees once they shed their velvet and usually are pretty tough to find once this happens.....that plus the fact that there are generally low deer numbers in the alpine can make for a tough hunt. With that said, there are some whoppers available so you might as well give it a go! Good luck in your quest!
