What can you guys tell me about unit 43 in the Maroon Bells as far as type of country and elk populations

The country is pretty rough. Lots above timbeline in that area but that is where the elk will be in the early season. Don't know about elk numbers but I know they are there.

You would want to go from Redstone or Marble and you would need horses to get an elk out of alot of it. Its been a few years since I been there.

I have gone up into there via the Redstone route. it is a brutal climb up into the upper basins. I was told one time that the outfitter who had the permit for that area refused to take horses up that trail after having a bad horse wreck on it. It is beautiful and vast country, but a guy would really have to have his ducks in a row to hunt it effectively and get any game taken out of there. I have been up in there when it was loaded with elk, and I have seen those upper basins devoid of life; you just never know.
