I just saw another post about a "can cooker" but they look like cheap flimsy aluminum. My brother and I do a lot of dutch oven cooking since we hunt out of a trailer so weight is not a problem.
Do any of you guys use dutch ovens?

I have a can cooker but only used it once. It worked well. Your rite it is very thin but didn't seem to make a differance in the performance.

All those can cookers are just steamers right? It sure isn't a pressure cooker. All you need is a pot/kettle and a steamer basket.

I like Dutch ovens a lot. I need some more practice, but they sure can make some tasty stuff. Pizza and peach cobbler are some of my favorites.

The most mackdaddy meal I have ever made was on the salmon river. Prime rib, au gratin potatoes from scratch, with a sourcream raisin pie(from scratch). all cooked in the dutch's on the 5th day of a 6 day river trip.

super simple chicken recipe
bag of chicken thighs
jar of orange marmalade
jar of Russian dressing
jar of catalina dressing
packet of onion soup mix.

combine in ingredients and cook for about an hour. real simple and great tasting sweet and sour chicken. Make rice how you wish. But rice in a dutch is pretty easy.

I have a cobbler recipe that will blow your socks off. But that is a later post.

We use the old fashioned cast iron dutch ovens. How do the alumium ovens work compared to cast iron? We make biscuits. cobbler, potatoes and onions, bbq chicken, bbq ribs, a whole turkey breast, mountain man eggs. The list is endless. it's really nice to put your meal together in the dutch oven and leave it cooking without worrying about it burning, then come back after your hunt and have it ready.
Between my brother and I we probably have 6 dutch ovens.

3 of my ovens are cast iron, 2 are aluminum

Any more I prefer the aluminum. Mainly because most of my dutch cooking is on river trips. they are lightweight, ease of cleaning and I can throw them in my load pile and not care if they get wet is a big advantage on multi day trips.
the biggest disadvantge to aluminum is you have to use that much more briquettes and longer cooking times. but with a little bit of expierence you get that figured out.

Now when I did the prime rib, I used my cast iron, because they do cook better. I just had to pack that one differently in my boat.

But anymore I grab the aluminum ones and don't look back. The big aluminum is where you can see the aluminum doesn't hold the heat as well and if I am using that one for lasagana or something thick like that. I usually have to make another batch of coals up when I put the first batch one.
