Duck calls

I'm a bit of a duck call junky, so I thought I might share these calls I just had made. My dad recently decided to sell his first farm, the one I grew up hunting, and shot my first deer and first duck off of. We rarely, if ever use the farm any more, so it was time to move on... When he told me he was going to sell it, I decided to go up, and cut some hedge for some projects I had in mind.

We've got a fantastic duck call builder here in KC, so I took him some of hedge I cut, that a friend was nice enough to take his kiln and dry for me. That hedge is some hearty stuff, and spent a prolonged period in the kiln!
Had the builder turn me three calls, all stamped with 'Hodge' (our farm name) on them somewhere.

These calls sound even better than they look, and I'm really stoked to give my dad one for Fathers Day, I'd imagine he'll be completely shocked.

Very nice. I have a duck call that I made when I was in high school out of really nice figured walnut. I copied the shape of a Cajun Call and used the insides from one. I have used it for 60 years. I'll have to dig it out and take a picture and post it tomorrow.

60 years is a long time to own a call! I really wanted to use walnut for these calls, but I just didn't have it in me to cut down a big old walnut tree, just for a few calls, and cutting boards and what not.. I didn't feel as bad, knocking off some big limbs of a hedge tree.

I started working with wood when I was a teenager. Made a few sets of pistol grips, them a few gunstocks. Wood was a lot easier to get them. I saved all the misc cutoffs and scraps to make other stuff. I have made around 100 stocks and can't count the number of pistol grips. Never really went out and looked for business, just made stuff for friends. Never was a business, just a hobby.

Great work! As a guide I always get asked what the best duck call for a beginner is and I always refer them to a local guy that makes them for himself. They are beautiful and he usually takes the one off order, I even picked up my best whittling knife custom made by him, best part is they will have something that they can keep instead of chucking that plastic shit.

Glad you brought this thread to the top, recently had my guy build me a new call, to commemorate my new baby. Can't have him slobbering on all my calls!
