I've never been to Wyoming so doubly excited this year. I've been pouring through maps and threads on others. Here's what I know: I'll be hunting solo or possibly with my Dad, camping near where we plan to hunt. If he comes it's just for the camping and companionship. Planning on bringing my CZ 550 in 308 with some Nosler BT 168s. Driving up from Kansas. Now where I need help...

I've got a pretty open schedule shoot for opening weekend or give it a week or two? I'm thinking earlier as if the weather is nasty I can wait and see what happens versus if I wait and it sucks it just sucks.

Planning to hunt off of 487 where 403 (also labeled Bates Hole Stock Trail) goes East/SE. Any thoughts on this part of the area... I'm guessing to the south of 403 is probably better, North looks to have more trees... I'm open to Email/PM if people don't want to post that publicly.

Thanks in Advance!

Justin

I have hunted that area a few times (been about 5 years though) on the Muddy Mountain HMA. You should be able to find plenty of animals on public land, both north and south of 403 if I understand where it is you're referring to. We always hunted opener and only for 2-3 days and never had a problem filling tags but you'll have plenty of company from other hunters. Can't comment on how hunting would be later in the season. The area is not known for trophy quality but you could stumble into a good buck if you're willing to pass up the numerous small ones you'll encounter. I did that the one year I had a buck tag and managed to score on a 14 1/2" buck on the very last evening after making a mile stalk through a drainage. Passed up 10+ smaller bucks over the course of the hunt. Good luck on the hunt. If it's your first time in the area just go in with the expectation that you're going to learn the lay of the land first and foremost and if you are fortunate to get into a nice buck it would be icing on the cake.

Carefull about all the private ground thereabouts. A lot of the antelope head for the private shortly after the crowds from Casper decend upon the area. Good luck on your hunt.

Thanks guys... Worth it to wait a week or two after opening and hunt midweek? Or once they get pressure are they slow to move back?

I have hunted 32 many times. I would hunt later in the season less pressure and a more enjoyable hunt if the weather is good .those roads can get nasty.

Hey thanks for the pointers. Ended up over west of chalk mountain. The landowner maps were much needed. Happy as hell with the whole experience, thanks again!
