DIY unit 81 in Colorado

3 guys and myself plan on doing a DIY elk hunt this year. We all failed to get drawn out so we are going OTC. We have chosen Unit 81. We know there are better Units but this one is our choice. Anyone have any luck there?? Any tips or info?? Thanks for the advice

I actually think it's a really good unit. I am not sure about trophy potential. But on the Southern end of it there are no atv trails. Only foot trails. I usually see some elk or elk sign when I go fishing in that area.

If you are looking for a camp and hike in hunt each day, not a good place. If you are up to hiking in 6-7 miles to start, and living off of your back, and hiking in further to find the elk, then you might be able to find a so so bull. All I have to say is make sure you have some buddies that are willing to hike the elk off the hill.

That is a great unit. Sleeper part of the state, no one really knows about it. Good luck!

Wow you dragged up an old thread! But I am also interested inhearing about this unit. Had I not pulled an 11th hour rabbit out of my hat I was going to do the same thing this year, same unit. I scouted it a couple years ago. Seen a few raghorns during archery season. I had a NM 52 tag that year.

My house is for sale in unit 81 and I will be going there this weekend. Elk on that unit don't like orange and after day one they get to the steep sides, its like they have evaperated. Saddle Creek will have elk, its tough. Send me a PM if you want details of what I know about 81.

8750 its not a sleeper unit lol... have you hunted it?? there is more orange in that unit then most other units, its hard to get a bull there because of this... Nelsonv how did it go?

I'll be doing a 2016 unit 81 too. we should share updates. i'll be coming from TN
