There are quite a few in the eastern part of the state. The Black Hills, maybe by Hulette, might be the best for public land. Most of the ones I see are on private I guess.

When I worked for a different outfit my Spring was pretty open and I used to hunt Turks in WY, MT,SD and sometimes Neb. every year as an NR.
X2 on the Black Hills north of Newcastle. You would almost have to be blind and deaf not to find birds there. Beautiful country and you are close enough to jump to another state if you tag out quickly.

Thanks guys, I made a blind run to NE last year. I got one bird hunting the SW reservoirs. But didn't get out there till 2nd week of may and they were pretty pressured and not talking. I would go earlier in the season next time. Its a long way to go in completely blind from MI but we still had a good time till the tornado's rolled in.

I was out there around the same time. Had some close calls but never pulled the trigger. I started in the NW corner then worked south. Those birds would not respond to our calling.

Did you kill one of those hybrids?

Not sure of they're range in WY but what's the chance of a DIY public land hunt? Would love to shoot a Merriam out there.
I have hunted DIY Merriam's on public land in NE Wyoming many times. I don't know how much time you have but you could put together a nice three state hunt centering around Sundance, Wyoming; Custer, South Dakota; and Crawford, Nebraska. Be aware the population is down somewhat in NE Wyoming.

Yes, from what I was told they are all considered hybrids in that area even though it looked more like a pure rio. I ambushed this one.

Very cool! Yea, he looks like a Rio.

I hunted SD Black Hills the year before and killed a Merriam. They gobbled good on the roost and only worked the first 45mins or so after fly down. I hunted the first week if May there, next time I go out to either area I guess Im gonna try mid April to see if the birds respond better but that early May weather sure is nice.

Turkey population in NE is really good. We dodge them regularly on the highways around Chadron. They seem to hang on private during the winter but disperse once the weather gets nice. If you are looking for some private land to hunt let me know. I have a few neighbors who let people hunt turkeys and p-dogs for a reasonable trespass fee.

Weather was nice except for golf ball size hail in the last morning and tornado's that afternoon. Other then that can't complain, can't wait to do it again.
