Not sure of they're range in WY but what's the chance of a DIY public land hunt? Would love to shoot a Merriam out there.
I was out there around the same time. Had some close calls but never pulled the trigger. I started in the NW corner then worked south. Those birds would not respond to our calling. Thanks guys, I made a blind run to NE last year. I got one bird hunting the SW reservoirs. But didn't get out there till 2nd week of may and they were pretty pressured and not talking. I would go earlier in the season next time. Its a long way to go in completely blind from MI but we still had a good time till the tornado's rolled in.
I have hunted DIY Merriam's on public land in NE Wyoming many times. I don't know how much time you have but you could put together a nice three state hunt centering around Sundance, Wyoming; Custer, South Dakota; and Crawford, Nebraska. Be aware the population is down somewhat in NE Wyoming. Not sure of they're range in WY but what's the chance of a DIY public land hunt? Would love to shoot a Merriam out there.
Yes, from what I was told they are all considered hybrids in that area even though it looked more like a pure rio. I ambushed this one.I was out there around the same time. Did you kill one of those hybrids?

Weather was nice except for golf ball size hail in the last morning and tornado's that afternoon. Other then that can't complain, can't wait to do it again.Very cool! Yea, he looks like a Rio.
I hunted SD Black Hills the year before and killed a Merriam. They gobbled good on the roost and only worked the first 45mins or so after fly down. I hunted the first week if May there, next time I go out to either area I guess Im gonna try mid April to see if the birds respond better but that early May weather sure is nice.
